Predjama castle

For more than 700 years it has perched proudly in a rocky cliff over 100 metres high: powerful and defiant – an impregnable fortress. Today’s castle dates from the Renaissance period, but the date of its construction is confirmed by a coat of arms of its owners, the Kobenzl family, from 1583. Concealed behind it is an older nucleus – the original cave castle. A symbol of defiance, the refuge of the bold, wilful and rebellious knight Erazem of Predjama.

Old depictions and descriptions – particularly from the last 200 years – prove that Predjama Castle was even then visited and admired by large numbers of travellers. It is still worth a visit today.

Destination Karst

In Slovenia there are almost 7,500 known and explored Karst caves. In addition to the Postojna Cave network, Planinska Cave and the cave under Predjama Castle, there are more than 20 caves open or partially opened to tourists (visits are possible under certain restrictions). Destination Karst is not only represented by Karst caves and other Karst phenomena: Destination Karst is a rapidly developing tourist resort situated in a geographical area where the Notranjska, Karst, Brkin, Vipava valley, Idrijsko-Cerkljansko and Rovtarsko regions join. The cave below Predjama Castle

The best known of these is via the Stable, where traces of Late Stone Age and Copper Age habitation have been discovered, along with finds dating from Roman times. The path into the underworld leads to the Main Passage. An interesting feature of the cave is the Passage of Names. Read more »
