Predjama Castle
For more than 700 years it has perched proudly in a rocky cliff over 100 metres high: powerful and defiant – an impregnable fortress. Today's castle dates from the Renaissance period, but the date of its construction is confirmed by a coat of arms of its owners, the Kobenzl family, from 1583. Concealed behind it is an older nucleus – the original cave castle. A symbol of defiance, the refuge of the bold, wilful and rebellious knight Erazem of Predjama. Old records suggest that the castle certainly already existed in the 13th century, and probably even before that. Old depictions and descriptions – particularly from the last 200 years – prove that Predjama Castle was visited and admired by travellers who were not afraid either of dangers along the way or of the difficulty of access.
Today, Predjama Castle offers a very different picture. As well as the museum you can treat yourself to a medieval banquet, take part in various events such as Erazem's medieval tournament, or even arrange a wedding in this wonderful location, guaranteed to lend an unforgettable character to the happy event.
